Hotwav Hyper 7 Pro Overview: Everything You Should Know

If you’re in the market for a reliable 5G rugged outdoor smartphone, the all-new Hotwav Hyper 7 Pro might might be worth your attention. This device has just been released as Hotwav’s latest 5G rugged smartphone, sharing it looks and design withe the Cyber 15 that was released back in April.

However, while the Cyber 15 is based on Helio G99, meaning it is a 4G-only device, the Hyper 7 Pro is powered by the Dimensity 7050 from where it got it 5G capabilities. We did a detailed comparison between the Cyber 15 and the Hyper 7 Pro, and you can read through HERE. But if you wish to know more about the Hyper 7 Pro, then this article is for you.

As you’d probably know, the Hyper 7 Pro isn’t the average smartphone that you know, it is designed for those who need a phone that can be used in anywhere possible. So either you’re out in the field, on a construction site, or just someone who tends to drop their phone a little too often, the Hyper 7 Pro should be a good option to consider, and here is our overview and all you need to know about the device.

Hotwav Hyper 7 Pro Overview

Design and Built Quality

The first thing you’ll notice about the Hyper 7 Pro is its rugged build. The truth remains that this phone isn’t going to win any awards for being gorgeous, slim, or lightweight, that’s not the point! The device has a chunky 18.4 mm body, and weighs in at a hefty 396 grams.

That’s almost twice as heavy as some of the sleeker smartphones out there. For context, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus, despite having a slightly larger screen than the Hyper 7 Pro, is still a whooping 200 grams less heavy than the Hyper 7 Pro; (396 gram vs 196 grams).

But there are reasons for the extra bulk and weight of the Hyper 7 Pro. Firstly, it comes with IP68, IP69K, and MIL-STD-810H certifications making it water and dust-resistant. For this sealing to be most effective, it has added component that will help keep dust and liquid away.

Secondly, the Hyper 7 Pro can survive drops from up to 1.2 meters, so the external built will require some added rubber and re-enforced edge to be able to survive these drops. Finally it comes with a battery capacity that is twice that of the S24 Plus, adding to it extra heft.

So if you can sacrifice those pretty looks for the extra toughness, durability and battery endurance of a rugged device, the Hyper 7 Pro is a good option to consider. While this certifications does not guarantee indestructability, it position the device as a better option for those working in a dusty environment, who may be caught in the rain, professionals in the emergency and rescue industries, or those whose phones are prone to frequent accidents drops.

Display Quality

When it comes to the screen, the Hyper 7 Pro features a 6.6-inch IPS LCD display with a 120Hz refresh rate. That means scrolling through apps, swiping through photos, and even gaming feels smooth and responsive. The resolution is 1080 x 2408 pixels, which gives you a crisp, clear picture, and the 520 nits of brightness is brightness enough for a comfortable outdoor usage.

The display is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, so it’s got some scratch resistance, but don’t go tossing it around without a care. The glass can still crack if it takes a hard enough hit. While I may not have any issue with the display glass, I think the Hyper 7 Pro would have still benefit more from an AMOLED screen with a slightly better display nit than 520, out door smartphones should have outdoor features right?

Performance and Power

On the inside, the Hyper 7 Pro runs on the Mediatek Dimensity 7050 5G chipset, which though not the latest flagship processor in town, but it’s more than capable of handling anything you throw at it. This SoC runs a dual-core 2.6GHz Cortex-A78 and a hexa-core 2.0GHz Cortex-A55 CPUs. It is backed by the Mali-G68 MC4 GPU for better graphic processing.

Taking things further, the device comes with a whopping 16GB of RAM, which is more than most people will ever need. And if you need more, you can virtually expand the RAM up to 20GB using some of the internal storage. Speaking of storage, the Hyper 7 Pro gives you 256GB out of the box, and if that’s not enough, you can expand it up to 2TB with a microSD card. More interestingly is the fact that both the RAM and built-in memory are of the latest breed; LPDDR5 and UFS 3.1.

Camera Capabilities

The camera setup on the Hyper 7 Pro is one of its standout features. The main camera is a 200MP sensor, which is overkill for most rugged phone users, but it means you’ll get incredibly detailed shots. It’s paired with a 24MP night vision camera that comes with IR illumination, which is perfect if you need to capture images in low-light environments for security workers or wildlife photographers.

On the front, you’ve got a 32MP camera for selfies. It’s not the best front camera out there, but it’s solid for video calls and the occasional selfie. The phone also supports 4K and 1080p video recording, so you can capture high-quality videos if that’s your need.

These are a combinations of impressive camera hardware, but the downside is that these phone is first a rugged device before it is a camera phone. So don’t expect the camera quality of a Galaxy S24 Ultra here since both phones has 200-megapixel cameras. This is because while the Hyper 7 Pro is being subjected to MIL-STD-810H tests, the S24 Ultra may be going through thorough camera tweak and optimizations.

Battery Life

One of the biggest selling points of the Hyper 7 Pro is its battery. The battery capacity is 10,800mAh, which is more than twice of the capacity you’ll find in some sleeker devices out there like the S24 Plus referenced above. You could easily get through a couple of days of heavy use on a single charge, and if you’re just using it lightly, you might not need to charge it more than once every few days.

When you do need to charge, the phone supports 33W fast charging to avoid being stuck waiting for hours to get back to full power. It also comes with a 10W reverse charge, which means you can use the Hyper 7 Pro to charge other devices like headphones, TWSs, or other smartphones.

Connectivity and Extras

As you’d expect from a modern smartphone, the Hyper 7 Pro comes with all the connectivity options you need. It supports 5G, which means you’re future-proofed as networks continue to roll out across more areas. You’ve also got Bluetooth 5.2, WiFi 6, NFC, and USB Type-C for charging and data transfer.

The phone also comes with a few extra features that might come in handy, depending on how you use it. There’s a side-mounted fingerprint scanner for security, and the phone has a dedicated LED camp light a feature that’s useful if you’re out camping or working in low-light conditions.

Final Thoughts

The Hotwav Hyper 7 Pro is a rugged smartphone that doesn’t try to be anything else. It’s built for durability, with enough power and features to satisfy most users. If you’re someone who needs a phone that can survive the elements and still perform well, the Hyper 7 Pro is definitely worth considering.

Sure, it’s not the lightest or sleekest phone out there, but if you’re looking at this model, you probably care more about durability and battery life than shaving off a few grams or millimeters. And in those areas, the Hyper 7 Pro delivers.

Although, it is still not the best rugged smartphone out there. Models like the DK 10 from Doogee, Amor 27T Pro from Ulefone, Oukitel WP30 Pro, the recently announced Unihertz Shark 1 and more, have their unique strength that have left the top seat in rugged smartphone debatable till date.
